Peace Events

If you were at the Adelaide Film Festival in February of this year, you would have seen the completely inspirational documentary "Peace One Day". Since then a dedicated team of people from all over Adelaide have been going crazy bringing together all sorts of events, liaising with  Peace One Day in the UK, networking with equally as passionate individuals and organisations such as Carclew, Save the Children, the Global Education Centre, the Department of Environment and Heritage, Adelaide Institute of TAFE and various church groups just to name a few, and generally generally gathering interest for this amazing project.

Peace One Day Screening

Chelsea Cinema, Kensington Road, Kensington - 5pm Wednesday 21st September

Thanks to sponsorship support from the Department of Environment and Heritage, we are putting on a free screening of Peace One Day followed by an opportunity for discussion and networking on how we can further the Peace One Day movement in Australia, how Australia can play an active role in promoting peace both globally and locally and future International Day of Peace events and initiatives that will promote a sense of peace and intercultural cooperation within Australia and that demonstrate to the global community our commitment to peace. Michael Luenig will be the keynote speaker, plus there will be an opening performance by Drum Atweme and the Gilles Street Primary School Taiko Drumming group. A drinks and coffee bar is being run by Fad Bar. Starts 5pm, film on at 6.

One Peace Art Exhibition trial - If you are an artist or know someone/people that are, please register your interest to join in the inaugural One Peace Art Exhibition.  All you need to contribute is one peace inspired piece, to be at the Peace Forum on September 21st, 2005. Some pieces are already on display at Fad Bar, 30 Waymouth Street, City. Limited places for this year, so please contact Deb at deebmyzy@yahoo.com.au to register your interest.

Schools for Peace

10am - 12.30pm Torrens Building, 220 Victoria Square, City

There was no way we could celebrate and raise awareness of Peace One Day without involving the kids! Together with Save the Children, the Global Education Centre and DECS we have come up with a mini festival for primary school children, involving activities around the themes of peace, environment, unity and culture. There will be an opening ceremony with Drum Atweme and the Gilles Street Primary School Taiko Drumming group, several activities and a closing ceremony. 6 schools will be involved for this inaugural event.

A Schools for Peace Information Pack including curriculum advice and activity ideas so even the schools not attending the event at the Torrens Building can still honour the day by doing activities within their school and classroom.

If you have any feedback, questions, suggestions or comments, please let us know via the email address below, and we hope to see you at the events!

Peace Talks - September 6th - Fad Bar - As part of the YHA's lead up to the festival, a night of guest speakers has been organised by the YHA Activities Committee. Speakers include: Joan O'Connor from Save the Children; Dan Handley will update on Peace One Day plans on behalf of Jeremy Gilley; a representative from the Australian Refugee Association will be speaking about life in SA as a refugee, and Sally Mchenry from OXFAM Australia will speak about their programs and fair trade. Peace Beats DJs will also be on hand to play some tunes after the talks and Fad Bar has plenty of great Australian microbrewery beers, so bring along all your buddies and lets make this a mid-week celebration, especially as Fad Bar is opening just for this!
